Kuemper would be great. Even with the injury history, with Smith signed already anyway it would be a good fit. Would be awesome if we could offload Neal or Koskinen instead of buying them out, but I can't see anyone taking either without significant adders. Need someone in the 2nd pair RH spot (not Barrie), and bottom 6 forwards still need a bunch of work too. The Keith deal without retention has us handcuffed a bit. |

They traded OEL, Hill and Garland. How is this a fire sale again? They been taking assets left and right and stock piled the picks. |

What is up with the hate for Barrie? He led the league for all defensemen in scoring. I get that he isn't a defensive specialist, but for a team starving for secondary scoring, he provides it from the backend (something the Oilers have lacked for ages).
How many years did we see Oilers fans (myself included) salivating over a possible Barrie trade?
The argument that he would take away powerplay time from Bouchard is stupid. We haven't even seen Bouchard play a full season. Let the coach figure it out. I'm not suggesting we should throw term and money at Barrie, but if he wants to play here and he's willing to stick around for say 3 or 4 seasons at 3 million, the Oilers would be foolish to turn him down. Will he get more in free agency? Who knows.

It's not so much who they traded away, but rather who they acquired:
Roussel (3M), Beagle (3M), Eriksson (6M), Gost (4.5M), Ladd (4.35M), and picks.
But yes, tell me more about how the Yotes are gearing up for a long playoff run with those studs.

Except he doesn't want 3yr x 3 according to reports/rumors. He wants 5 yr x 5. And that isn't a value to the Oilers. |

I think the goal was to get as many assets as we could. We were so bare thanks to Chayka and his terrible moves. I’ve heard we are looking at buying some of the Van players out. Roussel should add some grit we sorely lacked last year. |

Barrie is nothing but PP guy. The oilers top PP unit gets 95% of the pp time and that’s where Barrie got most of his points. He’s awful 5 on 5. Secondary assists aren’t what the oilers need. They need a legit 2-way RHD for the second pair. |

Yeah I was going to respond to that but let the Yotes fan be I guess. If there is a franchise worse off than the oilers it’s them. |

No hate for Barrie at all. He did great here, and I felt actually played better defense than most gave him credit for. But, he also accomplished what he set out to do when signing with us in the first place, raising his value for his next contract. Barrie at 5 mil per, over the term he is going to want, makes no sense for us.
Because GM's are stupid, I see Barrie getting 5+ over 5 to 6 years on his next deal.
Dougie is a pipe-dream, but he would solve so many problems on this team. I see Holland having to overpay for a RH to replace Larsson, who could even do the job? Savard, Montour, Demers, Hamonic, maybe McCabe? Holland should have made a deal with Francis to pick DeMelo, and trade him to us, although I think Appleton is a Francis type guy so it might have cost a lot to not pick him. |

Barrie is a great offensive player. Bouchard is a young up and coming offensive defence man. The hole we are trying to fill is Larson’s spot of a physical defensive player. Barrie does not fill that hole in anyway, and is a terribly fit with our current D corps. If we signed him we would then have to trade Bear who is likely already a better Dman than Barrie. |

Not quite true. In the last 3 years, Barrie is ranked #8 in primary assists at 5v5 for all defensemen. Ahead of the likes of Hedman, Sergachev, Ekholm, Ekblad, Giordano, Girard, and Pietrangelo or at the same rate while considering total games played (surprisingly). This incorporates last year with the Oilers and his year in Toronto before then where he recorded more secondary than primary assists in both seasons (nearly split assist distribution with Toronto tho). Before then, a majority of his assists with Colorado were primary assists (PP and 5v5). As such, this comes down to an issue concerning deployment.
If we look at Barrie's record with Edmonton further, the claim that Barrie is just a PP guy doesn't hold either. 22 of his points with the Oilers came from 5v5 play. 23 of his points from PP time (nearly split; distribution in line with the likes of Hedman, Pietrangelo, Hamilton, and more higher-tier players). However, there was a higher discrepancy between primary and secondary assists during his 5v5 time (5,13 respectively) compared to his PP time (you are correct in that regard) with the Oilers.
With that being said, I do agree that Edmonton would benefit from the addition of a 2-way RHD for the second pairing. Barrie's weakness is in his defensive play. While it has improved over the years, his spotty defensive awareness will always hold him back from ever reaching the likes of the players compared to him earlier (just to clarify). Simply put, Barrie is an Elite offensive defender with below-average defensive abilities, nothing more. A player that combines Barrie's strengths and Larsson's strengths is the ideal candidate for what the Oilers desperately need for the long-term outlook. Now that is a hard commodity to find.

Oilers didn’t waste 4 first overalls. One is the best player in the world still playing for the team. One was trade in. One of the worst 1:1 trades in history but is still a damn great player for a different team. One is still with the oilers as a top 6 c/w. Yakupov was the only “ wasted” pick.
But I won’t disagree that the oilers pissed away a lot under the poopty management this past decade. |

Maybe yakapov was ruined. Hall was the one that the oilers should have picked in that draft. Who knew he was such a selfish hard to play with teammate. And RNH has turned out to be a very important 2nd 3 line Center. I guess the oil could have picked landeskog or huberdeau. In 2011 |

Playoffs? They are in full rebuild mode. Hence the collection of draft picks. They took on those contracts to get above the cap floor.
Yes, you are correct. There is no long playoff run in the near future. |

Speaking of the Yotes, what would be the cost to have them eat half of Stralman's cap and send him our way? |

We would have been so much better off next year if Holland acquired Fleury instead of Keith, then just bought out Koskinen. Wouldn't have even needed to waste the 3rd rounder. |
